Check the ingredients. I think you will find gelatin.
| http://www.ivu.org/faq/gelatine.html wrote: | | Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. An alternative substance is called Agar-Agar, which is derived from seaweed. Another is made from the root of the Kuzu. Agar-Agar is sold in noodle-like strands, in powdered form, or in long blocks, and is usually white-ish in color. |
It isn't meat, but you will have to decide for yourself. Personally I gave up on avoiding gelatin because for some reason it seems to be an ingredient in so many vitamin, mineral, and herbal pills.
| http://inventors.about.com/od/gstartinventions/a/gummi.htm wrote: | | According to Black Forest (This is supposed to link to http://www.ferrarapan.com/) the makers of assorted gummies, "gummi candies are a blend of corn starch, corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, color, and flavor." The ingredients are weighed, mixed, and pumped into a special candy cooker that Black Forest uses, a 128 foot long stainless steel coil that cooks the candy by steam outside of the coil. Then the cooker pumps the gummi into a vacuum chamber to remove excess moisture. From the vacuum chamber the gummi moves on to a mix station where colors, flavors, acids, and fruit concentrates are mixed into the gummi stock. Next, the Mogul, a starch moulding machine pumps the gummi stock into starch filled mould boards that shape the gummi candies. After curing, the gummies are removed from the moulds, packaged, delivered, and sold. |
I used bold text for the word gelatin. It was not originally in the section I quoted, and neither was the reference to Black Forest being a link to their site.
There is some good news:
http://store.veganessentials.com/organic-vegan-gummi-bears-p954.aspx
They sell a "gummy" candy that looks like it may actually be good for you ...

other than being so high in sugar.
Also, it looks like at http://www.easyfunschool.com/article1514.html there are instructions for using packets of jello with minimal water added to make your own "gummy" candy - but it isn't clear to me where you would get the molds to form bears or worms.
For the record I do know that this was thread supposed to be a joke about the shapes of the candies, and I just hijacked it. |
