Prayer for a Good Death



Great Spirit, I am unworthy;

My species has disgraced itself.

Of all the species that live, or have ever lived,

Mine is the lowliest.

Lower than the flowers who fill the air with sweet pollen,

Lower than the trees who encircle the Earth with their roots,

Lower than the insects, rulers of Earth

Since the beginning of time,

Lower than the darting fish,

Lower than the soaring birds,

Lower than the four-legged creatures,

Who are the beating heart of the living Earth.

Great Spirit, my shame is as deep as the ocean,

And my sadness is unbearable.

I pray for enlightenment,

But fear that my prayer is too late.

Great Spirit, if this be so, then I pray for extinction.

Let my species become extinct, and vanish from the Earth.

Let my loins be barren,

Let my seed not sprout,

Let the race of men fall like leaves.

Let my fields grow wild,

Let my fences crumble,

Let my cities turn to dust, and become forests.

Let the grass drink my blood;

Let my body be food for worms.

Great Spirit, let me die, that the Earth may live.





To the sender of this message,



I want to compliment you on this group of messages which are so incredibly true and necessary. No doubt that the general public reaction to them is a very stupid one, which only goes to further reinforce the main point being made. I for one however, fully appreciate this mailing. It is by far the best I've received in years. It would be a particular pleasure to speak with the person who wrote that prayer to the Great Spirit, for it is filled with the kind of true humility, intelligence and wisdom befitting a real spiritual practitioner, not all these phoney-baloney new age fakirs.



My thanks also for the honor of including one of my articles in conjunction with these great works. Hopefully that inclusion will actually accomplish such noble aims as the author/compiler sought to establish in the public mind.



If you would like to correspond I would actually be enthusiastic in doing so, even though I've recently stopped mailing and writing because of the general impression that "no one gives a damn". Obviously at least a few people truly care as evidenced by the great honesty of these writings. Whoever composed them evidently cares more for telling the unvarnished truth than for public approval, and for that I am imminently grateful.

Matt, I would think you should be able to find this out quite easily as the one who posted it put your site at http://www.eoni.com/~visionquest in the profile line the same way you have it in your signature line. I am not suggesting the poster is perhaps an alter-ego of you but it does suggest the two of you share some common ground. Visionquest does appear to be you as your email address is visionquest@eoni.com which leads me to believe that the domain belongs to you. Therefore, since the poster of the prayer put the link in to your site, it suggests that he/she is either a follower/supporter of your site or he/she is you.

I'm not sure what you're piont is, nor how your thinking works on this matter. The visionquest site is indeed mine, and it was at the end of my article as included in the mailing, just as it is in the end of all my articles. I did not compose the Prayer hoever, nor the rest of that lengthy mailing.



What follows is another portion of that e-mail, which I will post here for the benefit of others...





"Forgive me if I introduce what to some of you may appear to be an irrelevant issue. The subject of the fate of the biosphere and the ethnosphere has been pushed so far past the back burner in this election that it has fallen off the stove altogether. I urge you to read the September and October 04 issues of the National Geographic. They contain some of the most clearly articulated warnings to the modern world of the consequences of our careless greedy and destructive worldview that it is possible to make. The September issue dealt with global warming and the incontrovertible evidence of our (most notably, the western industrial cultures in general and the United States in particular) not so gradual destruction of the earthís environment. This afternoon I received the October issue that contains a photo essay that recounts the continued difficulties the Indians of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Mountains are having with the destructive cultures that rule modern Columbia.







I was first introduced to the Kogi Indians of South America as part of the BBC documentary made by Alan Ereira called Message from the Heart of the World: the Elder Brother's Warning



These Indians escaped the fate of most of the other indigenous peoples of the new world by fleeing to the safety and isolation of the then impenetrable mountains in the north of Columbia where they have survived to the present day. Upon their request, a BBC film crew was dispatched to record what the Elder Brothers said was an important message to be transmitted to all mankind ñ or as they refer to the rest of us: The Younger Brothers: ìIf you donít stop what you are doing to our Mother (our planer earth) you will bring about the destruction of the whole world!î They remind us that we have, in spite of the councils of our august monotheism, in spite of our art, all our science and philosophies, we have lost the balance necessary to stabilize our material and spiritual worlds: the balance between light and dark, male and female, within and without, creation and destruction. In the final moving scene of the film, we see these beautiful white clad beings calmly withdrawing into their idyllic retreat gesturing to the reporter to stay back. ìYou are no longer invited to see our ways. Only remember this: you must go now and tell the world what we have told you.î







The imagery of this film, the existence of these people, and the warning they bring is a metaphor that our greatest poets would find impossible to frame as poignantly as this film does. Its impact is overwhelming. Even the heavens opening and the god of the Hebrews himself could not perform a more convincing argument. If these holy ones cannot wake us from our slumber, who can?







Tonight the candidates will debate on a burning stage. They will ignore the smoke burning their eyes and the fumes choking their lungs. The conflagration will not be noted or reported. Our mother earth is dying and she will take us all into the flames of the underworld with her. This fact will not be mentioned by either candidate. The issue dwarfs Iraq, the economy, healthcare, political corruption or any of the other things we seem to think are so important in the contemporary scene. We close our hearts to the catastrophe, crank up Britney Spears on the SUVís sound system and head full speed toward the abyss.



We have heard the Elder Brothers warning. Unlike us, they feel the true impact of our unrestrained technology. Unlike us they feel an unmitigated responsibility to save our Mother. It may already be too late for us to heed their warning.
