Those of you concerned about the effects of genetic manipulation of your foods may want to check out this link. They deal in only heirloom plant seeds and have varieties like I never saw before ... i didn't know there are that many kinds of garlic!!

Hiya,
My husband is looking to make a career change into horticulture (veggies) - anyone have any ideas regarding good courses?
Cheers,

You could check out local community colleges. Ours offers a number of things that are non-credit in this area on small scale. Also go to some small farms that grow organically they may be of help in where to go to learn a lot of this type of stuff. Or maybe even a garden shop that grows their own plants for sale like my parents did in their florist and garden shop. We grew most of the veggies we sold and a lot of the flowers too. |

Hi Sandy,
Thank you for that, hubby ended up taking the academic route and passed his first year with flying colours.
Although the course itself has a good chunk of theory, the whole experience, including the work experience, has been one of getting back in touch with nature and an holistic life view. Also, although it's enabled him to remove his rational blinkers of old they haven't been discarded completely, which means that he has been able to marry the practical with the spiritual elements of life... a win, win, win.
Midlife only becomes a crisis when we're not willing to change!
What's your interest in gardening, veggies etc? Personally, although I do enjoy getting my hands dirty occasionally and I do love to experience the open air and nature's energy, I don't seem to have the calling that others do.

Hi Pat
I like to do small yard garden but we seem to cultivate more weeds than anything else these days. But then I have had a hard year in just being able to spend time here at home. My dad passed away last november, mom got smacked in the head by garage door and nearly knocked her out and caused some bad arthritus in her back to act up that has not quit yet. She fell up at the cemetery memorial day and almost broke her ankle, add to that all the medical visits that our family has been going through this year.
I always grow tomatoes though because they are one of my favorites to eat. I have been looking for the black varieties of tomatoes that come out of russia. They do better in my climate which is short season. I also like the yellow pear and some of the other black cherry types of tomatoes. They make a great snack out in the garden.
The other thing I love to grow is dill! I have to have my dill pickles! I usually go to a organic small farm to get the cucmbers though. I grow some cucs for fresh eating but I buy a couple of 10 lb bags to pickle. Basil is one of my favorite herbs to grow. I am thinking of trying to grow some inside this winter for fresh use in the house. I suppose I should get it started now while the weather is nice outside.
I am also going to try to save some seeds from the tomatoes this year.
I dont think I have a great calling for gardening as I dont tend to my garden very well in other years. I also grew up in a garden and nursery buisness. My dad had the green thumb in our family. I have been working on trying to grow more herbs this year. Not sure I am doing too well but my basil did much better this year.
I also like to grow fragrent lillies. Mom and dad gave me some of theirs a couple of years ago. They smell so good and smell up a house really good!
